Are you interested in learning this centuries old, popular ‘scratch’ technique for your own ceramic pieces? It’s easy to learn and adapt to all creative levels, no need to be good at drawing or design, this rustic technique creates beautiful texture and pattern on any piece. This workshop is a basic intro to the sgraffito decorating method. Using prepared tiles you will practice scratching through a layer of black engobe (coloured slip) to create different kinds of lines and effects. Then you will design and scratch your own traditional black engobe tile and then also practice strategic sgraffito where you choose your own colours and paint abstract shapes that we later carve designs into. This technique allows a creative flow that is meditative and easy to follow. You can then use these techniques to decorate your future werkstatt pieces. Workshop breakdown: Two hour workshop with prepared tiles that include a practice tile, a black engobe tile and a blank tile for your own choice colours in the strategic sgraffito style Techniques learned: engobe application, carving techniques, designing negative space, pattern making Instructor will be on hand to help your own creativity flow, this is an imperfect technique with no wrong lines. Two tiles with your designs will then be fired as bisque wear and then fired again with transparent glaze for a solid long lasting tile that can be hung a wall, applied like a normal tile or used as decoration as a food safe spoon holder, table decoration, etc. available after 3-4 weeks for pick up.
